I have sat and wrote the introduction to this blog post at least 5 times now, possibly, even more, each time resulting in tweaks of the text and finally full deletion of the post itself and then starting again however this time I have opted to just go with a very upfront way of introducing the post which should be obvious by the title!

In the event it's not then lets get a few basic things clear Open-source, it's a touchy little subject no matter which way you address it and I don't plan on covering it in much scope in this post or at all really in the future as it tends to get people all hot under the collar and starting wars between small island based countries and feuds between families that tend to last for generations.

Open-source does not always translate to free, open-source at the most basic level means you and anyone can look at the code and depending on the type of license modify that code and/or distribute it freely.

FOSS or Free and open-source is often applied to simply open-source related projects and creates a realm of confusion when an open-source project charges for access to the codebase.

This post aims to introduce you, the reader to open-source games, I will do my best to indicate if these games have some form of cost involved in getting the game, however I am a lowly human that does not want to turn his hard worked on post into a definition of open-source, freemium, premium etc etc ... I just want to share some good games.

In a nutshell, let's focus the comments on the games not the moral complexities of the universe! Oh, and the list is in no specific order - I honestly feel like this post needs it's own lawyer.

0 A.D

RTS

About This Game

0 A.D. (pronounced “zero-ey-dee”) is a free, open-source, historical Real Time Strategy (RTS) game currently under development by Wildfire Games, a global group of volunteer game developers. As the leader of an ancient civilization, you must gather the resources you need to raise a military force and dominate your enemies.

Random Thoughts

0 A.D can trace its roots back to another classic game Age of Empires II which was a hell of a game providing hours and hours of fun, 0 A.D replicates and improves on that fun in its own way, if you enjoyed Age of Empires then this game is perfect for you, however, you do need to keep in mind the game despite its lengthy history does carry an alpha tag on its releases.

Although it's unlikely you will run into much trouble, some elements of the game will not run perfectly smooth, this is no truer than when units tend to build up, the more on the screen the more leg is likely to creep in - this, of course, varies system to system and improves from version to version and should you hit any snags, let them know on the forums!

OpenTTD

SIMULATION

No official trailer could be found, however, this video provides an excellent overview of what OpenTTD is.

About This Game

OpenTTD is an open source simulation game based upon the popular Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features.

Random Thoughts

The project itself seems to have slowed down in recent time with the last major release coming in April of 2018 (as of August 2018) however it still, for the most part, runs fine although a few notable issues exist on various platforms related to resizing windows and some specific graphics libraries otherwise tho it should be all good.

The game itself is as the video above says easy to learn, somewhat addictive but the game offers a hill climbing like difficulty increase with the complexity of getting the task at hand becoming harder and harder to accomplish - again to quote the video above, easy to play difficult to master.

SuperTuxKart

RACING

Random Thoughts

While I can say I have not personally played this one in a long time, a very long time, I have fond memories of this one racing around the track on what was at the time very modest hardware which is part of the appeal of the game it runs fairly good on even the most basic setup.

The game is at its core much like any other Kart game offering a fast and fun experience as you hall ass around some interesting and well-designed tracks, Mario Kart users will no doubt love this one and it's more than suitable for younger players.

Xonotic

ARENA / FPS

No official trailer could be found, however, this video shows a elite players of the game at work.

About This Game

Xonotic is an addictive, arena-style first-person shooter with crisp movement and a wide array of weapons. It combines intuitive mechanics with in-your-face action to elevate your heart rate. Xonotic is and will always be free-to-play.

Some like myself will have played the predecessor to this game nexuiz, which was insanely quick and a whole world of fun. The game much like Quake is played out very quick, usually on small maps with multiple levels of height.

The level of skill required from these games falls between the lines of having a very itchy trigger finger and a near perfect ability to memorise maps.

Warzone 2100

RTS

content is lacking on the official site, so a random gameplay video it is.

About This Game

In Warzone 2100, you command the forces of The Project in a battle to rebuild the world after mankind has almost been destroyed by nuclear missiles.

The game offers campaign, multi-player, and single-player skirmish modes. An extensive tech tree with over 400 different technologies, combined with the unit design system, allows for a wide variety of possible units and tactics.

Random Thoughts

While this game likely predates most of the Joolo readers by quite some margin, I actually do recall playing this one originally on the PSX (PlayStation... the first one) I don't actually remember much about the depth of the campaign.

In all truth, however, I do recall many moons later grabbing the game when it was released as an open-source project and heading into skirmish mode.. losing many many hours!

I'm a huge fan of the RTS genre and would rank this game up alongside probably my personal favourite of all time, Total Annihilation - a ton of fun and with mods and maps still being developed the many hours can be easily lost on this one!

Final Thoughts

I never intended for this post to become a multipart post, however, I'm so happy with the way it turned out and incredibly tired (it's 5 am!) but I have so many more cool games to talk about that I think deserve to be spoken about plus it's nice to get familiar with them once again.

It would be cool if I could sit down and record a little gameplay of the game myself and perhaps install them all with feedback on any issues I ran into but alas time is short and in the time this post took to compose I could have published 10 or so articles in other sections of the site that get way more recognition.

If you have any other games you think I should be taking a look at then post a link in the comments below or on our forums.
