Whenever gamers mention some studios we know that it is going to be good, this is a given for some studios that just do not miss step.. or at least thats what we are told, we have indeed seen many of these untouchable studios making some really odd decisions which have resulted in a bad game or worse yet a bad story, some have managed to redeem themselves via tweaks but the sour taste of a bad launch is rarely forgotten.
Dual Shockers via MSN wroteArkane has confirmed that Redfall will launch for Xbox Series S|X with only a 30 FPS quality mode available. The Xbox Series X will support 4K resolution, whilst the Series S will support up to 1440p resolution, but both will be capped at 30 FPS at launch, something fans aren’t taking lightly.
Cyberpunk2077 was a buggy mess on last generation consoles (PS4, Xbox One) and released with a good deal of its features missing, some which have as of yet not been patched in (remember the train/overground scene?) … prior to release CD Projekt Red were a studio that blessed users with exceptional visuals and compelling story.. in this case things managed to turn around and many are looking forward to the first paid DLC for this game.
Mass Effects ending was so disliked that Bioware ended up patching in an update that introduced a few changes to the existing endings and another option… this is the same development team behind legendary games like Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights (remaster this!) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age.. these guys do not miss step often but when this one compared to Cyberpunk2077 is on the opposite end of the scale.. one was broken out of the box the other was just a bad end to an otherwise compelling story..
Which brings us to Arkane and its next big release, Redfall … now being honest when Redfall was first announced, I Like many others thought Ok Left4Dead with vampires… and by Arkane.. this could be great! Then we heard the news that Redfall is more akin to FarCry (source)
Personally I had recently completed Far Cry 5, my first Far Cry game and while I really enjoyed the first ⅔ of the game it quickly lost steam and after a 6 week break or so, I forced myself back into the game to finish it… in terms of what Far Cry is as a genre… hard to say .. open world shooter with story progression is about the best I can think of .. but its Arkane … some little twist on things they add will very like breath fresh life into this concept .. and then we got the always online jab…
In an interview with Eurogamer, the dev team confirmed they were looking to complete a u-turn on removing the requirement for the game to be ‘always online’ with the tagline “we listen”… which seems like a really dumb think to pick on… right ? I mean they added it, confirmed it and then worked on removing it … so all good .. right?
Its the “we listen” but thats confusing, this is the first game Arkane will be putting on under the Xbox Studios umbrella (via Bethesda) .. Xbox the the gaming platform that released an entire console with always online until a literal storm of hate came down on this idea… which resulted in the Xbox One removing this as a requirement but the damage was done and the console struggled really on against the Playstation 4, Arkane did not need to be listening, they needed to learn from history and not waste developer man hours on crap that will only end up being ripped out.
You would think that would be the end of it but no, Arkane are not helping themselves or this game at the moment with the announcement that both the Series S and Series X versions of the game will be locked at 30 FPS, now when I was much younger, getting 30 frames was the goal and I have honestly played some games way back when on some horrible frame rates.. but that was then and this is now … 30 FPS on the Series X (again, at launch) is a bit rough
Redfall is already struggling with the always online bit, gamers struggling to play it and quite frankly warm-ish responses from early players of the game - and now this quality mode with 30 FPS on the top of the range version of the current platform 🤪
A performance mode is apparently coming later (per the tweet), I would argue it could be worth a small delay for polish but seems they plan to throw it to the solves to see what happens, which is a concern as we all know this game will be coming to Xbox GamePass on day one and a fair few media outlets have already suggested that GamePass could be doing some significant damage to game releases but thats very much an opinion I do not share… I have played some stinkers on GamePass (crackdown 3 comes to mind) and some really fun games I would have never touched otherwise (The Gunk, My friend Pedro)
Anyway back on topic - Redfall could be amazing, could be a stinker… Arkane do tend to deliver and I still suspect they will find that bit of magic that leads to an amazing game.. will it be another Prey or Dishonored, even Deathloop? or will be getting a Wolfenstein Youngblood, looks good, plays well but so, so dull.
