A few days ago, around the time of the Black Friday sales, I stumbled upon a shared host and while I was interested in their offerings I did wander into the blog and found what looked like an interesting post or at least it could have been If it wasn’t trash or just vague as hell.
An example of why I thought the article sucked was they listed Joomla! within the article, Joomla! does not come with nor offer a core component that could remotely be described as a forum… unless you count the contact form
Additionally, they listed FluxBB and Flarum, FluxBBs founder stopped working on FluxBB to work on a new project… Flarum, in short, showed the article writer had done very little research and while I’m no expert I thought I could do better.
The original article covered 11 “forums” in a specific formula, clearly done for SEO reasons so I thought I would copy the layout and products they used and offer my own opinions.
I have written this article several times now, the first time it was too bitch, the second it was monstrously too detailed so third times a charm, let me know what you think in response below and if I missed anything let me know! Keep in mind the short nature is because I tend to overwrite, but if you want to know more or need more info drop a response and I or someone else I’m sure will be happy to respond.
- phpBB
- MyBB
- WordPress
- Joomla!
- Drupal
- Vanilla Forums
- Simple Machines Forum
- FluxBB
- Codoforum
- Discourse (coming soon)
- Flarum
So now you know what a forum is and perhaps you are looking to get yourself one, you have a ton of options but I have done my best to help you figure out if the platform listed is the right one for you, please don't be afraid to ask questions I or someone else in my tiny community will hopefully attempt to point you in the right direction!
This post originally was one huge post and it was massive, long and boring to read, I moved the forums then into responses, still long and required a lot of scrolling to get the post of interest. In the end, I opted to split off the various posts into separate specific posts as it will allow for a quick read on what interests you and for responses to be specific to the forum in question.
Each post has been tagged accordingly and this post will serve as a hub for feedback and recommendations, abuse should be left on the specific forums post! Thanks!
