The title is a little cheeky and my sense of humour is as dry as some deserts, but Kotaku once a good source of gaming news with a cheeky twist (like dbrands marketing posts with less cursing/abuse) well not just news but reviews, insights, random thoughts and the odd how to X guide.. well they just lost another editor in chief with Jen Glennon now moving on.
According to several sources including aftermath (below) and The Verge, her decision to resign seems to come down to a complete switch up in logic for the website which will now be pushing out gaming guides and not just a few, a lot of gaming guides …50 a week! five zero a week!
Its not an impossible task but (at least based on the quote below) the analytics do not even suggest that regular readers of Kotaku even consider the guides in comparison to the news articles and writing quirky news articles versus stale and accurate writing of gaming guides can hardly be ideal…
Most companies, streamers or people with brains tend to lean into where the analytics say they are strong.. my analytics for example say nobody’s reading so I write like nobody is reading and that works for me! Kotakus owners on the other hand have opted to go with down the road of boring… weird given the site they purchased really..
Aftermath wrote“After careful consideration, I have concluded that the current management structure and decision-making processes at G/O Media are not aligned with my values and goals for Kotaku,” Glennon wrote in her letter of resignation, which was addressed to G/O Media executives Jim Spanfeller and Lea Goldman.
“I firmly believe that the decision to ‘invert’ Kotaku’s editorial strategy to deprioritize news in favor of guides is fundamentally misguided given the current infrastructure of the site,” Glennon wrote. “[This decision is] directly contradicted by months of traffic data, and shows an astonishing disregard for the livelihoods of the remaining writers and editors who work here.”
