Destructoid have published an article regarding the upcoming Game Awards and it’s hard to disagree with the sentiments being discussed.
The game awards have been around for a short time now, but long enough for a few youtubers and gaming related websites to take notice of them and treat them as something you should care about, however for the most part nearly everybody is aware that the awards in general are one giant advertising platform.
Big game companies like Microsoft (Xbox) and Playstation, Nintendo as well as publishing and development giants like EA and and 2K are pushing deals (https://joolo.net/d/472-ea-game-awards-sale-steam) and promotions around services (https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2022/12/02/play-the-game-awards-nominees-today-with-game-pass/) all in the end goal of making us the consumer think the awards matter.
Every form of media has some form of grand awards that every artist reaches for - Movies has the Oscars, Music has the Grammies and television has the Emmy but gaming does not have that rich history of awards - so should you care about it? Nope not at all, the best game could be that indie game you loved (My name is Pedro!) or that AAA multi million dollar game (Halo Infinite I guess)
Don’t get too hung up on the idea of some game you may never play because its locked away on another platform (Mario on Nintendo, Halo on Microsoft, God of War on PlayStation) but and this is the important part, you should absolutely enjoy the deals, every single one of them!
